Unbound Merino Review – The BEST Merino Wool Travel Clothes?

Traveling in hot places is always hard because you don’t have many clothes, and you don’t always have places to wash the clothes that you do have. AND since it’s so hot, you’re pretty much sweating all the time. Your clothes always smell. And you have to rewear them, over and over and over again.

If only there was a type of clothing that didn’t smell, that you could rewear multiple times, sweat profusely, hang them to dry, and the clothes would smell as good as new the next day?

This is where the beauty of Merino Wool Comes in to play. In this post, we will be reviewing the clothes of Unbound Merino – by far our favorite “travel-clothing” brand that we have ever encountered!

About Unbound Merino

Unbound Merino was created by three lifelong friends obsessed with travel. They realized that it’s very important to travel light, so they needed clothes that were versatile and good quality. Unbound Merino is the product of their desire to travel and live more freely. Because when you pack less, you’re able to get more out of your travel experiences. This is when Unbound was created.

The clothes are very simple with no logos on them, which makes them good for any occasion. They are woven with superfine Merino which makes them not itchy and incredibly soft, which is a HUGE plus. When many think of Merino, they think of that itchy and scratchy material, but Unbound’s Superfine Merino Wool is not like this. It is very comfortable. And the greatest part of Unbound’s clothing? It doesn’t smell – at all. You can wear these clothes for weeks without washing them. I promise you.

All of their products also highlight the other superpowers of merino wool…

  • It regulates your temperature, keeping you cool through warmer climates with the breathable fabric and warm and cozy when it is cold with the insulaton
  • It dries fast even when getting damp from a drizzle or when you hang it up to dry after washing!
  • It doesn’t wrinkle, merino wool is naturally crease-resistant because of the nature of the fibers
  • It’s sustainable, ethically sourced and cruelty free; Unbound Merino wool is sourced from RWS certified, mulesing-free, independently run Australian farms

Sam’s Unbound Merino Review – Men’s Line

My Black Unbound Merino Crew Neck shirt is the only shirt I wore during 3 weeks in the Philippines. I would wear it during the day (and get really sweaty b/c I was in the Philippines), hang it up at night, and it would be ready to go the next morning. It’s honestly hard to believe this until you experience it firsthand. I’ve never owned a shirt that doesn’t smell bad after wearing it for a day in a hot and humid climate … until I got this Crew Neck from Unbound.

Here are some of the Unbound pieces I own…

Men’s Merino Crew Neck

The Black Crew Neck was my only shirt for 3 Weeks in the sweltering heat of the Philippines. I’m 6 foot 2, 185 lbs and I wear a size Large. It fits just right for a night out. Never smells. No logos. If I sweat a lot in it, I hang it up at night, it dries, and it’s good to go for the next day. Seriously, it never smells!

Men’s Merino V-Neck

I actually prefer this one a bit more than the Crew Neck. It’s a bit looser in the arms, which I find to be more comfortable. I have this shirt in Ivory and it’s amazing. Doesn’t smell.

Men’s Merino Tank Top

My all-time favorite shirt to wear. I wear this in every environment where it’s socially acceptable to wear a tank. I love the fit how the straps up top aren’t too thin or too thick. A real game changer for hot-climates because it’s breathable and it doesn’t smell after I wear it!

Men’s All-Season Ankle Socks

My personal favorite Unbound product. I have 3 pairs of these, and these are the only socks I travel with. So I travel with 3 pairs of socks total, and I never have to wash them, and they never smell. This is an unbelievable travel hack, considering how bad normal polyester socks smell after sweating in them! I used to travel with 5-10 pairs of socks because I knew I’d need a new pair every day on the road. Not anymore!

Kelsey’s Unbound Merino Review – Women’s Line

Although Sam was the first out of the two of us to hop on the Unbound Merino train, I quickly followed suit after seeing how well his pieces held up during our last trip. As someone who spends a lot of time next to Sam and near Sam, I can absolutely vouch for the fact that even in the sweatiest and hottest environments, he does not have any kind of bad smell when he’s wearing his Unbound Merino shirts.

That being said, I had to try some of the products out for myself and I’m very happy with my picks ⬇️

Women’s Slim Merino Crew Neck T-shirt

Wearing the Slim Crew Neck T-Shirt for a work event!

I was in need of a classic t-shirt for traveling but also for work and I’m glad I chose this shirt! It’s super versatile, and I was able to dress it down with a pair of linen pants for a long travel day to New York City AND I was able to dress it up with a silk skirt and a blazer for a work event that same night. I loved that I can use the same piece of clothing and not have to worry about it getting wrinkled on the flight or smelling bad as I transition into my work fit. I also like the slim fit of this shirt and the length is perfect for tucking into skirts and pants. (Size XS / Color Black)

Women’s Merino Rib Tank

I needed a tank top for the warmer climate but also something I could use as a layer. The Rib Tank is super lightweight and a bit thiner than the t-shirt, but has really nice stretch because of the ribbed design. Like the t-shirt I feel like this piece is super versatile and have so far used it for walks (paired with the bike shorts) and for trips to cafΓ©s. The one thing I would say about this tank is that the length is a little bit longer than I’m used to, and as a 5’2 petite I wish there was a little less length at the bottom. I also probably could size down to an XS, but I preferred the looser fit on this one. (Size S / Color Forest)

Women’s Merino Bike Shorts

I am SO excited about these. Finding good activewear (especially made with natural and sustainable materials) is difficult! Thankfully, Unbound Merino has a great athletic wear line that they continue adding to as they grow, and I am a proud owner of the Merino Bike Short. They are not itchy, the perfect length for my height, thick enough to feel secure (including a thicker waistband), AND feature a zipper pocket! So far, I’ve only gone on walks with the shorts and they are perfect, but I’m excited to try them out on a run or longer hike and see how they hold up in higher intensity activities. (Size S / Color Black)

Women’s Ankle Socks

I’ve actually borrowed a pair of Sam’s merino ankle socks before getting some of my own and loved how soft yet quick drying they were. The problem was that we have very different shoe sizes and the Men’s socks are definitely too big for my feet. Now that I own my own pair, I seriously cannot take them off! I love the soft feel and the fact that they dry quickly and never smell. I’m excited to slowly transition out of my typical sock wardrobe and stock up on one or two more of the Unbound Merino Women’s Ankle Socks! (Size Women’s One-Size-Fits-All / Color Grey)

Summary – Unbound Merino

I first discovered Unbound Merino from an Instagram ad and was blown away by the quality and advertising. But then I saw the price of a shirt and I thought “no way am I buying that!”. (A Crew Neck or V Neck is $90 from Unbound)

BUT I really needed a comfortable shirt that I could rewear in hot climates. I had tried other Merino Wool companies before and was very unhappy with the quality. (itchy/scratchy) Unbound had very good reviews so I took the leap and bought a shirt and some socks. I’m so glad I did.

Unbound is a quality company. Their merino wool is not itchy, and is very comfortable. Plus, it doesn’t smell. They have free returns and exchanges for 90 days if the clothes don’t fit. Their customer service is amazing. $90 is a lot for a shirt, but when it’s the only shirt you’re wearing for a month long trip to the Philippines … it’s worth it. You can pack much less and travel around with ease.

If you have a trip coming up and are thinking of buying some Unbound Merino, do it. If you don’t like it, you can return it, but I promise you you’ll love it. These clothes have become the only clothes that I wear this last year, as I don’t have to wash them and they look great.

πŸ’‘ TIP: If you’re looking for another sustainable clothing brand recommendation, we highly recommend PAKA! Their “Hoodie” is one of my favorite pieces of clothing that we own. We wear these almost every day! Checkout PAKA Here!
