Perfect One Day in Athens Itinerary | Complete Guide 2025

I’m gonna be honest, I’m not one for big and touristy European capital cities in the summer. But to explore the Southern isles of Greece, or the beautiful Meteora Monasteries and the stunning Vikos Gorge in the North on a Greece Road Trip, you’re probably going to have to fly into Athens first. Since you already have 1 Day in Athens, it makes sense to spend some time here exploring and learning about the history of this city.

We have designed this perfect 1 Day in Athens itinerary for you to see some of the highlights this city has to offer. We think 1 full Day in Athens is perfect to get a vibe for the city and then continue on with your trip.

1 Day in Athens

If we had one day in Athens, this is what we would do. We actually had four days to explore the city, which was a few too many in our opinion.

First Stop – The Acropolis

Right in the center of the city, this is pretty much the only ‘Must-Do’ thing when you come to Athens, and we recommend you do it first thing in the morning. When we came to Athens, we thought if we booked our tour at night we’d avoid the crowds – not true. There will be crowds here from opening to closing no matter what, so we recommend you get it out of the way first thing.

To visit The Acropolis, we recommend you go with a tour. Normally we hate tours, but there are no plaques or boards to read in the Acropolis, so if you don’t have a guide you’ll just be walking around aimlessly with no references. Also, a ticket costs 20 euros and you want to buy it online so you don’t have to wait in a long line once you get to the entrance anyway, so we think investing a bit more for a tour is well worth it in this case.

Second Stop – Checkout Anafiotika, Plaka & Monastiraki (neighborhoods near the Acropolis)

After you visit the Acropolis, head down the hill to Anafiotika. This is a very small neighborhood with narrow streets and white houses. Great for pictures, as you can see below.

After 30 minutes perusing the streets of Anafiotika, head down the picturesque Plaka stairs and tour the neighborhood of Plaka. This is probably the most touristy neighborhood in Athens, and is loaded with restaurants, cafes, and shops.

If you are in the mood to see a cool flea market, we recommend you venture to Monastiraki and visit the Monastiraki Flea Market. Here, you will see many cool shops and a lot of souvenir stores with some hidden vintage gems as well. We recommend grabbing some lunch at Couleur Locale, a beautiful rooftop with great food that’s not too expensive and has an incredible view of the acropolis! See below:

Third Stop – Take A Cooking Class (1 Day in Athens)

In the afternoon/early evening, we recommend you do a cooking class in Athens. You have to remember, Athens in the afternoon is HOT and you are not going to want to be walking around at this time. We think this is the perfect time to do an indoor cooking class before heading out to the highest point in Athens to catch the sunset.

If you don’t feel like spending the money on a cooking class, you could visit the Central Market on your own, visit the National Garden, checkout the Panatheinic Stadium, or my personal favorite … just go chill in your hotel room. You’re going to need energy to catch the sunset later, so maybe you’d prefer to relax in the AC before climbing the tallest point in Athens.

Fourth Stop – Lycabettus Hill for Sunset

This was my personal favorite spot in Athens. In general, I like things that are free, outside in nature, and come with a beautiful view. Lycabettus Hill has all three of these things. This is area is very safe at night.

The hill took us about 15-20 minutes to climb up, and comes with easily the best view in all of Athens. You can easily make out the Acropolis, Olympic Stadium, and the mountains surrounding the city from here.

Once you are done at this hill, there are a few restaurants with an amazing view of sunset that you could visit on your way down. (however, they are a bit expensive)

How to Get Around Athens

Fortunately for you, Athens has a very good Metro system. That being said, you shouldn’t need to take any taxis when you visit Athens, as the Metro can take you anywhere in the city, and goes all the way from the ferry port West of Athens (Piraeus) to the Airport East of the City.

When we came to Athens we bought a 5 Day Pass for about 8 euros. With this pass we could take any metro or bus within the city. The only thing this pass does not include is a trip to or from the airport. For this, you have to pay extra. But, all of this is self-explanatory when you go to buy your tickets at the metro. The machines are in English and are very easy to use.

Extra Day in Athens?

We had 4 four full days in Athens, so we definitely wanted to get out of the city and explore. We rented a car through Discover Cars and headed all the way South to Sounion. We visited a beautiful beach called Cape Sounion which we would highly recommend. After the beach, we headed to the town of Lavrio for dinner and ate at Pezodromos. We really enjoyed this town as it had a very local vibe and had a lot of energy to it. It certainly wasn’t mobbed with American tourists like most of Athens and the Cyclades Islands tend to be.

Finally, if you’re interested, this tour will take you to the Cape, you’ll also visit the Temple of Poseidon. This is a good option if you don’t want to deal with renting a car.

Other Things in Athens Not Included in This Guide – 1 Day in Athens

There are plenty of other things to do in Athens if you have time. Here are the ones we would put at the top of the list.

Archaeological Museum

12 Euros Entry Fee. There’s a ton of history, ceramics, and pottery at this museum. If you like museums, this could be a good way to pass the afternoon in Athens. For me, I found this museum kind of boring and for 12 euros I could have passed on this. Tons of tour groups come here though.

National Garden of Athens

We walked around this massive green-space in the middle of Athens after visiting the National Archaeological Museum. It’s a big park with some ponds and a bunch of turtles meandering around.

Panatheinic Stadium

Originally built in 400 BC, then rebuilt in 144 AD by Herodes Atticus – a Roman senator, this stadium hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It was later used as an Olympic venue when Athens hosted the Olympics back in 2004. You will definitely notice this place from the Acropolis, as well as when you hike up to Lycabettus Hill for Sunset.

Philapoppus Hill

Closer to the Acropolis, this is a small hill that could easily be climbed after you tour the Acropolis. It’s a nice 10-15 minute walk to the top, and you get a great view of Athens. We did this during our time in Athens and would recommend it – this hill doesn’t get crowded like Lycabettus Hill does.

Where to Stay in Athens – 1 Day in Athens Itinerary

Most hotels are located near the center and the touristy sites. We stayed West of the center near Egaleo and really liked this neighborhood. There were hardly any tourists here, and the neighborhood felt very local and very Greek. We found a ton of great local taverns and cafes to enjoy. It’s about a 15 minute metro ride to the center from here.It would be smart to stay near a Metro stop so you don’t have to walk to far while carrying your bags!

Island Hopping from Athens

If you’re coming to Athens, you are probably coming to visit the Greek isles. The easiest and cheapest way to begin island-hopping in Greece is from the port of Piraeus, just West of Athens. You can easily take the metro all the way to Piraeus from the airport, or anywhere in Athens.

In our opinion, the islands of Milos and/or Paros would be great places to begin your island-hopping trip from Piraeus. You can easily find direct ferries to these islands.

Northern Greece

When you come to Gree🥾ce, we highly recommend you visit the Zagori Region in the North. Although most tourists only visit the Greek islands, we think you’re truly missing out if you don’t head North to visit the Meteora Monasteries, as well as Vikos Gorge, referred to as “The Grand Canyon of Greece”.

Summary – 1 Day in Athens

I have to say, I was actually surprised at how nice and safe Athens felt. I did not see many scammers or homeless people on the street like I normally do in touristy European cities (Paris, Barcelona, …). The metro is very nice and cost-efficient and can take you anywhere you need to go, from the port of Piraeus all the way to the airport on the other side of the city. There are some nice viewpoints to catch the sunset, and the food is truly delicious and isn’t that expensive. (About 10 euros for a dish, 3-4 euros for a Gyro)
